In every company there are specific responsibilities that each employee is assigned. While each of those tasks is of vital importance, there will always be miscellaneous items that don’t align with any team member’s role. In the fast-paced and ever-changing solar industry, this is even more true – companies must consistently adapt to new technologies and trends, all while taking care of their customers.
At BayWa r.e., we call those important floating tasks undefined work: projects that fall outside the norm of our daily work but are still crucial to business success. Undefined work is not yet scoped and needs a designated management process to assign deliverables, milestones, and resources. Our team at BayWa r.e. uses the “Set it, See it, Own it, Solve it, Do it” model to manage undefined work. SSOSD is a tool for process creation and iteration that helps facilitate team training. It stems from the framework designed by Roger Connors, Tom Smith, and Craig R. Hickman and is outlined in their book “The Oz Principle”. The framework centers around the importance of accountability, which the authors say is an employee’s personal choice to rise above their circumstances and demonstrate the ownership necessary for achieving desired results – the key to adaptive (and successful) leadership.
I brought the SSOSD framework to our organization for 2 reasons: First, I needed a systematic way to increase ownership and accountability of our team’s results that allows us to adapt quickly to the ever-changing environment. Second, I wanted to increase critical thinking skills in all our employees, so they interrupt the “solve it” monster and evaluate the impact of problems to deliver right size solutions quickly to our customers.
The (SSOSD) Framework
To adopt this framework into our team’s everyday workflows, we designed a leadership development program to train the use of SSOSD. Read more about the program and how our team will start using SSOSD here.
