Professional Engineering

A Professional Engineer (PE) review and seal (stamp) is an official certification indicating that a design complies with applicable safety codes, structural requirements, and electrical standards. For solar and energy storage systems, a PE stamp identifies the licensed engineer(s) responsible for the design and is typically required for interconnection agreements and permit applications.
Most jurisdictions accept digital seals, however, some still require a “wet stamp,” which refers to a physical ink or embossed seal accompanied by the engineer’s signature on the reviewed plans. Professional engineers must be licensed in the state where the project is located. By applying their seal, the engineer assumes legal responsibility for the portions of the design they certify.

The primary engineering disciplines relevant to solar projects are electrical, structural, and civil engineering:
  • Electrical engineering ensures proper circuit sizing, system design, and compliance with safety standards such as the National Electrical Code (NEC) or equivalent governing bodies.
  • Structural engineering verifies that roofs or ground-mounted systems can safely support solar equipment loads in addition to environmental loads, including wind, snow, and seismic forces.
  • Civil engineering, more commonly required for commercial or large-scale projects (e.g., solar farms or EV infrastructure), addresses geotechnical conditions for foundations and support structures, drainage and stormwater management, and site access for construction and maintenance equipment.

Plans for Every Phase of Your Project

See how expertly designed project plans can simplify the development and execution of your PV, EV charging, and energy storage projects. These engineered documents ensure that your system is designed, approved for interconnection, and constructed efficiently. By providing clear communication on system layout, electrical configuration, structural compliance, equipment specifications, and safety requirements, you can confidently meet the standards set by Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and coordinate effectively with your project teams. Depending on your project’s phase, you can access tailored interconnection, permit, and construction design sets to suit your specific needs.

Interconnection design sets (IFX) are prepared for utility review to obtain approval to connect the system to the electrical grid. These sets focus on system size, electrical configuration, and the point of interconnection, and typically include a one-line diagram, site layout, and key equipment specifications.
Permit design sets (IFP) are more detailed and are submitted to the local AHJs to secure building and electrical permits. They emphasize code compliance and safety, often require a Professional Engineer (PE) stamps, and include structural details, electrical diagrams, fire setbacks, and relevant calculations.
Construction design sets (IFC), or “Issued for Construction” plans, provide the most detailed guidance for installers and field crews. These plans translate the approved design into build-ready instructions, including precise system layouts, wiring and conduit routing, mounting specifications, and material requirements. Together, these three plan sets ensure the project is properly reviewed by utilities, approved by local authorities, and executed safely and accurately in the field.

Green Button Data — Energy Usage Transparency

Green Button Data is a national initiative from the U.S. Department of Energy that gives businesses and building owners secure access to their electricity usage data in a standardized format. easier to analyze load profiles, evaluate project feasibility, and model savings with precision—helping you turn energy data into actionable design insights.

U.S. Atlas of Electric Distribution System Hosting Capacity Maps

The U.S. Hosting Capacity Atlas provides public access to interactive maps showing how much distributed energy—like solar PV—can be added to local electric grids before upgrades are needed. Developed by the DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, this tool helps C&I installers identify optimal interconnection points, streamline project development, and better align with utility infrastructure capabilities.
